The second half of life, in Kingston upon Thames

Life span is not the goal. Health span is.

It is not just the length of a life, it is the quality of it. Active Choice is about staying strong, mobile and independent through the second half of yours. I am Linz, and I teach the training that gets you there, until you no longer need me.

Linz crouches beside a man in a yellow shirt who is hanging beneath an outdoor bar in a park, body held in a straight line, while Linz guides his shoulder.

What actually matters

Four things, and not much else

Almost everything worth having after fifty comes back to these. The good news is that meaningful progress in all four is possible in thirty minutes, two to four times a week.

  • Strength

In muscles and bones, which is the part that quietly decides how independent you stay.

  • Cardio

Cardio-vascular fitness, so that the ordinary things stop feeling like an effort.

  • Mobility

The ability to use a good range of movement, and to still have it next year.

  • Balance

Literally, not falling over. It is trainable, and it is worth training early.

Who you would be working with

Forty years of training, and thirty of teaching

I am Lindsay Pickton, though most people call me Linz. I was born in the summer of 1969 and started working out in 1983, which means I have been training consistently for well over forty years. Gyms, swimming, cycling, running, and since 2012 a proper focus on bodyweight exercise and callisthenics.

The other half of it matters just as much. I have worked in education for over thirty years and spent twenty five of them coaching and mentoring adults. Knowing how to train is one thing. Knowing how to teach an adult something they are not sure they can do is another, and it is the part most personal training misses.

How it works

You will need me less as we go, not more

We start with a conversation, which is free. What you want to be able to do, how much time you honestly have, and where you want to train: outside, at home with or without equipment, or in your gym.

Then I build you a workout of between ten and thirty minutes and I teach you the form, one movement at a time, until you can feel for yourself when it is right. We carry on until you feel you do not need me standing there. After that I am available when you want me: for a plateau, for a return after illness, or to talk through what comes next.

The consultation is free. The first workout is £60 and workouts after that are £50. See the full pricing.

Start with a conversation. It costs nothing.

Tell me where you are now and what you would like to be able to do. If I am not the right person to help, I will tell you that instead.
